Most NYC museums and gardens feature a few hours a week that are free or "pay what you wish," and for my own use (and now yours) this season, I compiled the following handy directory of places & times to serve as a guide. All information below is accurate as of February 2008, though you'll definitely want to click to the listed websites for possible scheduling exceptions.
Be forewarned that discounted days are generally more crowded (especially at the bigger museums like MoMA). Most aren't so bad, though -- and you've got nothing to complain about regardless when you get in for free!

The Met is pay what you wish all the time, even though they "suggest" a $20 donation. If I didn't find it so boring in there, I would go more often with a handful of change to donate.
