On Wednesday I went to an authors' event for the newly-released Girl's Guide to Kicking Your Career Into Gear, the third book in the Girl's Guide series by Caitlin Friedman and Kimberly Yorio.
Why separate the genders when talking about career matters? Well, the authors emphasized that us ladies are notoriously bad at boasting accolades we have every right to brag about, not just in job interviews but in the workplace in general. Though, of course, a lot of the tips and tricks given would be valuable for either sex, Friedman and Yorio relay information in a conversational, relatable style that they say they would've appreciated earlier on in their careers from a female friend or mentor.
The Girl's Guide to Starting Your Own Business and the The Girl's Guide to Being a Boss (Without Being a Bitch)
are their previous two titles, respectively. Yorio said the idea for the first book came to her when -- during the development of the two's publicity firm -- she'd searched for business resources and only came up with dense, dry texts that were a bore to read. These lighter, more enjoyable reads set out to empower women to open their minds to career goals that are exciting and fulfilling.
As the series grows, so does the Girl's Guide network, their organizational effort to make networking less of a dirty word through its support for career-minded women worldwide. Friedman and Yorio are scheduled to tour the country throughout 2008 with workshops in support of the new book. They put on an informative (and at times very funny) talk, so see the website for the calendar and for more info about the series and network overall.

Interesting review, thank you for adding it to the 20s Something Finance Carnival.
If you hadn't, I wouldn't have known about this book. It certainly sounds like a new, fresh look on the same old concept of starting a business.
I loved it when you mentioned how the author got the idea for the book.
